In this poetic memoir of a 1940’s and 1950’s insular Catholic girlhood and the family that surrounds her - a father often out of work, a mostly silent mother, brothers who don’t survive - a family reminiscent of “The Little Dollhouse Family” “who moved without a trace,/ and sadness rose, escaping up the stairs…” Despite many sorrows, the daughter finds joy in her mother’s laughter, transcendence in the natural world where “hope springs anew, branches fill with silent wings.”

Julie Cooper-Fratrik, Achievement Grant in poetry (Leeway Foundation, Philadelphia), MFA from Goddard - VT College. Collections: The Slow Separations, Breathing Lessons (a remembering), and Further Lovely Lettuce Lore (from Anna’s salad days).
