“Three Golden Shovels for the Grave” utilizes the golden shovel format made famous by Terrance Hayes. In this poetic form, the last word in each line forms a quote from another source. In this poem, quotes were taken from a poem by Robert Hass, a line from the 1989 movie Batman, and phrases found on gravestones in Crown Hill Cemetery.
