The evening of this poem takes place in 2015 at Fort Worden in Washington State on a walk with my writing-program roommate. I wanted the poem to amble the way the walk ambled, to savor, and save, that magical feeling of presence, finding one’s self and losing one’s self at the same time, while making peace with the impossibility of return.

Joannie Stangeland is the author of several collections, including The Scene You See (Ravenna Press). Her poems have also appeared in Bear Review, Cherry Tree, Quartet, Painted Bride Quarterly, and other journals. Strangeland holds an MFA from the Rainier Writing Workshop.
