Shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine, I was scrolling through war photos on the CNN website. One image of a wounded Ukrainian woman haunted me until I returned to it and wrote “Chuhiv, Ukraine February 2022.” Writing the poem was something I could do to honor the woman in the photo, and the writing also became a way for me to “stand with” innocent people who continue to suffer the unspeakable trauma of war.
