Like many Brits, I grew up listening to the shipping forecast, a BBC Radio broadcast that provides weather reports for the seas around the British Isles. It's been a national institution since 1925, providing an iconic style of broadcasting, sonically unique and peculiar, making it doubly enticing for lovers of language and cadence. My poem imagines a woman anxiously awaiting the daily report, unraveling on the linoleum as she imagines her husband lost at sea; the stuff my childhood imagination thrived on!
